Omotenashi FAILED

While the hotel had some positive aspects, our overall experience was marred by two separate incidents where our garbage was not collected. Additionally, when we contacted the front desk to address the issue, the response was less than courteous. The management's handling of the situation did not meet our expectations, especially considering our previous experiences with the high standards of Japanese omotenashi culture. Due to these experiences, we are unlikely to choose this hotel for future stays

First, the location is amazing. Just a 5 or so minutes walk from the Shimbashi train station, which is on the JR circular line that takes you to Harajuku, Shinjuku and Shibuya. The room was great, small but convenient, and the bed was amazing, comfortable and big! There are 2 smoking rooms in the hotel which is great if you are a smoker as smoking on the street is forbidden. Also, the breakfast was amazing! Would highly recommend staying there!

Clean, Modern Hotel but with glaring flaws

Let's get the good out of the way, shall we. I think the overall aesthetic of this hotel is great. It's super modern and has a great, clean, look to it. The mattress is on the firm side, which I personally prefer. The staff have always been incredibly friendly as well. I like the fact that, upon checkout, you can just toss your card key into a box and that's it. You're done. Room service is really efficient and they're always nice. I like that they always stock you up with bottled water each time they clean your room. I DO however, think it would better serve the staff if you just had a checklist of things you needed changed/cleaned each time. They gave me so many free toothbrush/toothpaste packs that I could open an online shop to offload them. The spa is super relaxing and really, like most of the hotel, aesthetically pleasing. It's a great way to unwind after running through the city all day and just a lovely feature provided to all guests. It's also nice to have access to laundry, especially during the hot and humid days of a Japanese summer. Now, let's talk about what I didn't like. I have booked stays at this place before and they've always charged me for the room, yet this time, they charged me for the number of guests (2 btw) upon check-in, and that was an unpleasant surprise. What was I gonna say? No...I think we'll sleep on the street? Full disclosure, I have stayed here pre-covid, so maybe their policies changed since I was last here in 2018. My advice is to double-check that all of yours guests are included with your price to avoid this sort've mix up. Most likely my fault for not reading the fine print, but still, not something you want you want to deal with after hours of travel. I had the King-size bed this time, whereas before, I had the Twin. Keep in mind, the only thing changing is the size of the bed, NOT the room size. This was a bit of a surprise because, as you may know, small is par for the course in Japan...it's expected. However, the King-size bed took up a ton of the already precious square footage, and made a small room a cramped one. Quite frankly, it was too much bed for my gf and I. The Twin would have sufficed, but alas, hindsight and something I could have probably found out beforehand if I were more proactive. Being there in July, the heat and humidity are substantial and for some reason, we didn't have a window we could open in the room. However, my brother, staying in a different room, could open his. I personally feel this is important, especially during summer, for the sake of fresh air. Otherwise, you're left breathing in recycled air-conditioner air (super loud and squeaky btw), which you know is not ideal. If this is a important for you, clarify with the hotel beforehand if your room has a window you can open. The bathroom is incredibly cramped. Your elbow will most likely rub against the sink as you're sitting, doing your business. I know everything is smaller in Japan, but this is cramped more than just small and you have been warned. Also, while we're talking bathrooms, the toilet tissue they provide is like 1/2 ply. I mean, it's transparent. I assume this is a cost-cutting measure, possibly an attempt at being eco-friendly, but I feel like it defeats the purpose of both when you have to use three-times as much toilet tissue for the result some decent two-ply would provide. Now, let's talk about some things that I found a bit annoying, but may not be a big deal for some travelers. The elevators in the hotel are insanely slow. There are two of them, and you'll still sit there wondering what is taking so long...every...time. If you're unlucky enough to have your room directly across from the elevator (like I was), well, you'll hear every single conversation that takes place as the other guests chat while waiting forever for the elevator. The TV's in the rooms are a great size, but there is literally 1 international channel. That's a big head-scratcher for me as, presumably, most of the clientele is non-Japanese. No, you're not traveling just to watch TV, but after a long day exploring, it would be nice to put your feet up, relax and watch some TV. At the very least, streaming options should be standard in 2023. Being able to view Youtube, Netflix, etc. on the TV should be there. I've seen some reviews saying the location is great, and it both is and isn't. It's great in that it's in close proximity to Shimbashi station (5 minute walk, tops), which is a great station in that it's connected to all the major lines and you can get to pretty much any location of interest from there. However, the area itself that the hotel is in, isn't great. It's pretty boring during the day, with just restaurants and convenience stores and at night, it's borderline sketchy. When the sun goes down, the streets are lined with bar and restaurant workers hustling to get you into their establishments. Also, a lot of half-naked young ladies accosting people to get them into their hostess bars. You're really running a gauntlet of aggressive sales-tactics. The foot-traffic is mainly drunk businessmen doing the nightly pub-crawl, so unless that's your scene/idea of a good time, I'd look elsewhere. Certainly not a 'family-friendly' locale after-hours. That being said, it could be fine for one or two nights, but a week-long stay just isn't ideal imo. Alright, thanks for reading my long-winded, but ultimately thorough review of the Candeo Hotel Shimbashi. I hope it helps you in your decision making when you travel to Tokyo!

Small room but comfortable and good for short stay with busy during day time.

I choice this hotel because i went to same brand at Osaka in 2019. This hotel room and spa area was smaller than the Osaka one i went. The room is small but clean and comfortable. Since their price is not very expensive, so I will recommend because you can stay with their onsen after shopping. You still need to walk around 8 mins to some train station. And there is a lot of restaurants nearby. Because my arrival flight is late, so I hope they can deliver towel and stuffs instead we have to pick up in reception during night time.

After flying in from Australia and being picked up at the airport it was nice to go to the hotel and just relax for a bit . Really enjoyed the hot bath on the top floor, lovely hot water, one of the baths was open to the fresh air, lovely to get a fresh breeze on you while in the hot water . All your soap, shampoo, conditioner hair dryers are there for your use , used it morning and night . Everything is spotless and staff are good , The smorgasbord breakfast was first class, great variety and very fresh, we had to put on plastic gloves to serve are own food so the hotel are doing everything right to keep us safe , definitely would stay here again , it is close to the station which is important to us .
